WHAT IS THE FIRST YEAR SYLLABUS AT IIT BOMBAY?

In IIT Bombay, the first-year syllabus is almost the same for all the students irrespective of their department. The first-year course of IIT Bombay is as follows:

1st Semester:

  1. MA 105 - Calculus (This course comprises of both Differential as well as Integral Calculus. This is that one course which makes students suffer a lot in the first semester. In 1st year, everywhere there is a buzz about MA 105. It is like a nightmare for quite a lot of students. But if you study properly, you'll easily score well. Till midsem, I had 24/60 but then before endsem, the head professor said that the grading will be done on best-of (Insem + Endsem) or (2 x Endsem). Since till midsem (“till midsem” means insem which comprises of quizzes and midsem exam), I had already screwed up in this course because of fear created by the buzz everywhere and so for the endsems, I decided to knock it because I had a golden chance to do it due to the new grading policy announced by the head prof and yes, I did it. I scored 36/60 and so it was 2*36 = 72 out of 120 and I would have easily got 8 pointer but then the head professor mailed just 3–4 before the grades came that the grading will be only based on (Insem + Endsem) and in this way my marks were 24 + 36 = 60 out of 120 which got me a 6 pointer)
  2. CH 105 - Organic and Inorganic Chemistry (This is a half-sem course. Organic mostly revolves around isomerism, type of configuration and conformers. MOT holds quite a good weightage. The inorganic part is relatively easier and is mostly memory-based. If you have studied inorganic properly during your JEE preparation, then you can easily score well. Both organic and inorganic holds equal weightage)
  3. CH 107 - Physical Chemistry (This is also a half-sem course. It mostly comprises of Quantum Mechanics in Chemistry, Schrodinger's Equation and Wave Functions)
  4. PH 107 - Quantum Physics and Application (Mostly revolves around Quantum Physics and Schrodinger's Equation)
  5. BB 101 - Biology (This course is taught in three parts. It is roughly about DNA/RNA science and tissue culture. Physical biology is also taught in this course)
  6. ME 119 - Engineering Graphics & Drawing (AutoCAD and Solid Works)
  7. CH 117 - Chemistry Lab (This is the most coolest and chill course of first-year)
  8. NOCS02 - NCC/NSS/NSO (This is a zero-credit course which you have to compulsorily take. You’ll have to take just one out of NCC, NSS and NCC. This course continues as the same and the remaining half is done in the 2nd semester. You may get PP/NP i.e. Pass/Fail in this course which is mostly given on attendance basis. If you fail, you’ll have to repeat it again like other courses)

2nd Semester:

  1. MA 106 - Linear Algebra (This course only comprises of matrices and determinants. So if you have studied these two chapters properly during your JEE preparation, then you can easily score well)
  2. MA 108 - Differential Equations (You’ll study various methods of solving differential equations of one as well as more than one order)
  3. DIC - Department Introductory Course (It is different for different departments. This will give you an idea of what you’re gonna learn and study in your department from 2nd year)
  4. PH 108 - Basics of Electricity and Magnetism (Very high-level view of electricity and magnetism)
  5. CS 101 - Computer Programming and Utilization (This course will be your first experience in the world of coding if you didn’t take Computer Science in Class 11. You may or may not like it and yes, this course is tough as well. This course only comprises of C++ language)
  6. ME 113 - Workshop Practice (A small training course on workshop techniques like fitting, welding, pattern making, cutting wood and metal etc. This course is even more chiller than Chemistry Lab)
  7. PH 117 - Physics Lab (Physics Lab is as tough as Chemistry Lab was easy. Just remember this one word “Dark Room” if you’re reading this post. If you’ll get into IITB, then you’ll experience this word by yourself when you’ll do Physics Lab :P)
  8. NOCS02 - NCC/NSS/NSO (Just the continuation of where you left your NCC or NSS or NSO in the first semester)

Important: The whole batch of first-year IIT Bombay is divided into 4 divisions. Students of 2 divisions do BB 101, ME 119 and CH 117 in the first semester and CS 101, ME 113 and PH 117 in the second semester depending upon their division and vice-versa. Also FYI, each division is divided into 5 tutorial batches.

Even though I’m a pass out (2020) of IIT Bombay but I would love to see if any JEE aspirants reading this post will get into IIT Bombay (The dream college of every engineering aspirant). All the very best for your future exams and career.

This is for all the people who are gonna join IIT Bombay this year i.e. in 2020. Those of you who have already got IITB and have frozen their seats and also wants to know about what’s there in the academic store of IIT Bombay for first-yearites, then this late-edit is for you all. Here, I’m sharing you some links and pages. Hope this helps you!
