HOW SHOULD I ATTEMPT THE JEE ADVANCED PAPER?
Very Important For JEE Advanced 2021 Candidates
The JEE Advanced consists of a mixture of various types of questions including multiple-choice questions with the single correct answer or multiple correct answers, comprehensions followed by two or more objective type questions with single or multiple correct answers. The matrix match type questions may involve matching two columns or even three columns. The integer type or numerically answer type questions involve a subjective type question with the answer an integer or could be asked correctly to two/three decimal places.
Firstly, students need to read all the instructions in the question paper carefully before attempting to understand the type of question. Experts believe that the exam should be solved in two rounds. In the first round, start with the subject as per your comfort level attempting all easier and moderate level questions with not more than 40 minutes on each subject. Use the last 60 minutes to solve the remaining questions in the second attempt and those marked for review.
JEE Advanced 2021: Strategies To Attempt Different Type of Question In IIT Entrance Exam JEE Advanced 2021 and Important Points To Remember During The Exam Hour

- Multiple Choice Questions with Single Correct Options: The best way to attempt these questions is to run through the question option. Scanning the question again after the options in mind helps to strategize the approach to solve the question. Sometimes, the options themselves guide the correct strategy or even the correct answer.
- Multiple Choice Questions with One or More Than One Correct Options: In such questions, each question has to be solved and mapped with all options. It may also happen that the options are the same values written in different forms. Statistically, these are the questions with the least percentage of correct responses. One must only answer the correct options in case of partial marking in these questions.
- Comprehension Based: Even if you know the concept mentioned in the given comprehension, you should still read it thoroughly because there are chances of redefining a concept or providing hypothetical assumptions. In that case, your correct approach might lead to an incorrect answer.
- Matrix Match Type (One To One Matching): If the question is of one-to-one matching, then your approach should be finding the odd one out (if any). This will help you quickly reach the correct mapping. Don’t go on solving all the entries of Column I.
- Matrix Match Type (One To Many Matching): This type of matrix match would be the most challenging and time taking. The suggested way would be to attempt this problem if you are confident in the concepts of all four rows, or else keep this question at bay for last.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Generally, these questions are the subjective questions converted to objective and hence would be time taking. The correct way would be to treat them as subjective and solve them only if you have a command on the topic or if you have attempted all other questions of the paper. These questions also have a low-scoring statistical record. Last year, answers correct to two decimal places were also asked. So, students are advised to write answers correct to decimal places as asked.
- Non-Negative Integer Type: In these types of questions, the answer is a non-negative integer in R (set of real numbers). These questions are also the subjective questions converted to objective and hence would be time taking but the benefit of these questions as compared to NAT questions is that you know your answer is only correct if you get a non-negative integer or else, you know that your answer is not correct, unlike NAT questions. This is actually a subset of NAT questions.
- Integer Type: In these types of questions, the answer is a non-negative integer ranging from 0 to 9 (both inclusive). These questions are also the subjective questions converted to objective and hence would be time taking but the benefit of these questions as compared to NAT questions is that you know your answer is only correct if you get a non-negative integer ranging from 0 to 9 (both inclusive) or else, you know that your answer is not correct, unlike NAT questions. This is actually a subset of Type 6 as well as Type 7 questions.
- Assertion-Reason Type: These days reasoning-assertion types of questions are not asked, but in case there are few questions of this category, be very careful if both the statements are correct. Because then it’s very tricky to decide between options A and B or else you can mark the correct response easily.

Some Important Points To Remember
- Take a good sleep before the D-Day. Don’t take too much stress about the exam day. Be cool and normal. Be confident on your hard work and in what you know.
- Arrive at the test center well in time and try not to go alone there. Go with your Mom, Dad or some other relative. Don’t forget to carry your admit card and other documents (if asked/required).
- Avoid going to the washroom during exam hours. Finish everything before the start of the exam.
- Read all the instructions very carefully, especially the marking scheme.
- Keep an eye on the timer.
- Don’t lose your confidence and morale anytime during the exam hour.
- Read the question, the given data and go through all the options very carefully and quickly before writing the solution.
- Solve properly on the scribble pad so that if you have to go through your solution again, you don’t get confused. Be careful while selecting the option(s) on the computer screen.
- Start with that subject which you’re the best at. Further, start with easy questions and the first question must be easy because that will boost your confidence. Don’t give too much time to the first question because it may decrease your morale if you won’t be able to solve it.
- Try to save time from Chemistry so that you can use it for Mathematics.
- Don’t leave questions without negative marking unattempted. Choose a guess option(s) or write a guess value in the case of NAT questions.
- Don’t rush. You don’t have to solve all the questions. Accuracy should be of utmost priority.
- Don’t take any question to your gut.
- Be extra careful in questions of the type “ONE OR MORE THAN ONE CORRECT”. If there is a partial marking, only chose the option(s) that you’re 100% sure about. Don’t go into temptation.
- Forget what happened in Paper 1 and how happy are you with your performance. Have some food/snacks after Paper 1 and go for Paper 2 with even more energy and confidence. Remember, Paper 2 is the last step of the final stage, so deliver your best. You know you can.
All the very very very … … very very … … ∞ best to all the candidates of JEE Advanced 2021.
